Early Birth

There may be cases where the 40-week pregnancy process results in premature birth due to various reasons. The way to prevent premature birth, which can put the baby's health at risk, is to not interrupt regular health checks from the first days of pregnancy.

Don't ignore the contractions

Premature birth is defined as the birth of a baby in the womb before the 36th week of pregnancy. Premature birth, which ranks first among early infant losses, is experienced in 8 percent of pregnancies. Premature babies whose lungs are not fully developed are unfortunately more likely to have vision or hearing problems. Therefore, it is important for every expectant mother to be aware of the signs of preterm labor during pregnancy and to be sensitive to the symptoms. Contractions that occur at least 4 times an hour are among the most important symptoms of preterm labor. Most of the time, contractions accompanied by pain can also occur without pain. With this;

  • Proliferation of vaginal bleeding or discharge
  • Feeling of tension in the uterus
  • Sudden discharge of copious amounts of fluid from the vagina
  • Cramp-like pains similar to menstrual cramps
  • Significant low back pain

Your risk is higher if you have had a miscarriage

Unfortunately, the risk is higher for expectant mothers who have had one or more preterm births, have been treated for the risk of preterm birth, or have had a recurrent miscarriage. Besides;

  • Cervical problems.
  • Multiple pregnancy.
  • Excess fetal fluid than normal.
  • Closure of the birth canal by the placenta
  • Vaginal infections.
  • Losing excess weight in a short time.
  • Premature birth rate is high for expectant mothers under the age of 18 and over the age of 40. There are also interchangeable states.

Not consuming cigarettes and alcohol, consulting a doctor for medication, performing appropriate exercises regularly, and being cautious against infectious diseases reduce the risk of premature birth.

Premature Birth in Pregnancy; Do not miss the regular follow-up program

Regular follow-up and doctor control from the first days of pregnancy reduces the risk of preterm birth. It is necessary to follow up the expectant mothers who are in the preterm birth risk group under the prediction, treatment and prevention program. The first step in making the diagnosis of preterm birth is a doctor's examination. Some tests, such as fluid samples to be taken, measuring the length of the cervix, and opening of the cervix above a certain level, may often be sufficient for the diagnosis of preterm birth.

Prefer centers with neonatal intensive care units

Under favorable conditions, it is possible to gain time for the baby to grow in the mother's womb by stopping premature birth in pregnancy. Success in preventing preterm labor is directly related to diagnosis and early initiation of treatment. In order to relieve the contractions, fluid is supplemented by intravenous route. In cases where this intervention is not sufficient, different drugs are used to stop contractions with drug treatments called tocolysis to stop preterm labor. The drugs used in the treatment of tocolysis may have side effects on the mother. Therefore, it should be done under the supervision of a doctor in the hospital. In cases where there is no neonatal intensive care unit in the hospital where the birth took place, the baby may be transferred to another hospital with an intensive care unit, if necessary.
